Olestra: “Hey Apu, you got any of those potato chips that cause diarrhea?”

When a company who manufactures toiletries decides to branch out into food products, expect trouble. Olestra is manufactured by Procter & Gamble. That’s like saying Satan manufactures Christmas toys.

Olestra is another monster of chemical engineering. Sugar molecules are artificially forced to bind with fatty acids, creating a polymer, yet another plastic. This polymer creates a creamy sensation on the tongue, fooling you into thinking you are eating something yummy when, in fact, you’ve just consumed a large wad of plastic. This sugar/fat/plastic polymer is too big to break down and so complicated that digestive enzymes are unable to deal with it. Once again, this is what we get when we allow chemists to invent food. (All you chemical engineering majors, take note!)

The other problem with these plastic disasters is that they don’t leave the party alone. They drag vital nutrients with them. When you suffer food poisoning, your body doesn’t take the time to sort the edible food from the poisoned parts. The body is in such a hurry to bounce these poisons out the door that valuable nutrients become lost in the shuffle.

Artificial sweeteners and fats are treated like poisons in the body and eliminated in that same swift fashion, also dragging valuable nutrients. Like a toxic magnet, Olestra traps fat-soluble vitamins: A, D, E, plus fatty acids and other fat-soluble nutrients. It blocks antioxidants like beta-carotene, lycopene, and lutein. Antioxidants are nutrients that help regulate body functions and detoxify the body. These antioxidants are critical for eye health and maintaining vision. You might consider whether your eyesight is more important than a creamy-tasting chip.

Most Olestra products were yanked off the market due to the alarming rate of distressing bouts of diarrhea that occurred a few hours after consumption. Homer Simpson concretized this dilemma in the infamous Simpsons episode when he asks the store clerk, “Hey Apu, you got any of those potato chips that cause diarrhea?”
